Saturday surprises

I'm breaking my blogging vacation because I just received a wonderful surprise in the mail from my sweet friend in Paris! She sent this t-shirt and the napkin with the map of Paris on it and I absolutely love it!  So thank you again O!!!  It's hard for people who don't blog, to understand how special my friends are who I've met through sharing our lives on our blogs and by email. I like to think of it as a present day pen pal. I like that friendship isn't confined to just where you live anymore. The friends I've made have so many things in common with me that I never feel alone and we inspire each other to be even better people, artists and friends. I think generous and thoughtful people have a way of attracting each other and this has been my wonderful experience here with all of you!

The sun is shining today and we're going to go to Nathaniel's Art Show at school this afternoon. The kids only have 12 more days of school left before summer break and it's come so quickly!  I am going to boast a little because they are both being recognized at a rewards ceremony: Caroline in Social Studies and Nathaniel in Science and English! I'm very proud of them and how well they've done in all their classes this year. I'm also proud of how they've navigated Middle School which is an extremely difficult time of life socially as they grow into adults. Both of them are solidly grounded in who they are and that is my biggest wish... to be themselves and not try to be like someone else. Sometimes teachers don't see their strengths in everything so I try hard at home to call those out. That way when they have to make decisions about their careers and the direction they'll take in life, they will have more of an idea about what they might want to do. Most of all, I just try to spend time with them. Sometimes that means that my own projects just don't get done (and that happens a lot), but at the end of my life, I know I will never regret the time I spent with my family, so I am content with the progress of other things (or I try to be!). That being said, I have not accomplished anything on my book illustrations besides some more character sketches. I know some books can take three years to do... hopefully not mine! But I won't get so upset with myself when plans get changed for my time to work.

Hope you're having a good weekend too!

Sweet! Love it! And yes, I agree that blog friends are every bit as important to me as are some of my face to face friends. You, for one :)

What are your summer plans? Will you be making more memories that you won't regret on your deathbed? :)

What a lovely post Beth! I agree - it's sol lovely to bring your circle of friends into a new dimension = meeting people you'd never have met otherwise as distance keeps you apart - and I am blessed to call you my friend!

Tell Nathaniel and Caroline congratulations from me!! Well done on winning the rewards - I usually won the geography prize (think people thought that was funny as my dad was head of the department but I was just good at geography and my dad wasn't my teacher...)

I have had a good weekend - laughing at your marathon t-shirt as I was running the Edinburgh marathon today - ok just a leg of it - 8 miles - but it was fun - even though it was windy and raining much of the time and there was a lot of hanging about!!

Congratulations to Caroline and Nathaniel! Brilliant children!
...to be ourself and not try to be like someone else... Very important to be clever enough not to loose itself in a way which wouldn't be our personal way! and lose a lots of time, sometimes years...
and I agree with you about the friendship that we can make through blogland :)
Elle is beautiful!
