Santa is coming...

And the house is busy preparing for Christmas Eve!! This morning I baked a beautiful Chocolate Mousse Cake ... the recipe came from an older Cooks Illustrated Magazine I had on my bookshelf. That should satisfy all the chocoholics around here! Then I started to prepare the Chateaubriand to make another Cooks Illustrated Recipe for Roast Beef Tenderloin with Carmelized Onions and Mushroom Stuffing.
I'm almost ready to do the next step. I feel like a gourmand today! We'll eat this tonight with baked potatoes, green beans, an arugula salad with walnut, proscuitto, fig and Parmesan dressing, italian bread and later the chocolate mousse cake. Tonight we also attend the Christmas Eve Mass which is a tradition for me. I love being in Church as Christmas begins.

I know I promised more info about fat... I'll do that after all the Christmas activities are over. The kids can't wait to open presents tomorrow so they've been bouncing off the walls today! I'm looking forward to a relaxing day... we're supposed to get bad weather again so it's just as well that we're home tomorrow.

I hope all your Christmas wishes come true!

Saturated fat is good!

I know... it seems blasphemous but it is absolutely true! After some comments left about coconut milk I knew that I needed to share what I know to be true especially since there's so much bad information out there right now. I also have a lot of family members with high cholesterol numbers and there are a lot of misunderstandings about what that means too. Even your doctor doesn't always take the time to learn this (yes... they follow government standards and the most commonly reported research...the loudest being the studies funded by the companies that want you to buy their products). If you go to your family doctor and you're diagnosed with higher cholesterol, s/he will want to put you on medicine to "treat" the supposed offending condition so that you can avoid heart disease. What many clinical studies have shown and also studies of whole cultures of people is that our American Medical Association isn't looking at the right data and some of what they are prescribing as preventitive, is in actuality making your cholesterol condition worse.

If you don't believe me, there are two books you should read that list every study and explain in laymen's terms what all of this means: Real Food by Nina Planck and Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon. If your hair and skin is dry, you can't lose weight, you seem to be sick regularly even though you eat "healthy" and take your vitamins, or you are depressed or just sad more often, you may be missing enough animal fats in your diet.

Here are some facts from Nourishing Traditions:

"Fats from animal and vegetable sources provide a concentrated source of energy in the diet; they also provide the building blocks for cell membranes and a variety of hormones and homorne-like substances. Fats as part of a meal slow down nutrient absorption so that we can go longer without feeling hungry. In addition, they act as carriers for important fat-soluble vitamins A,D,E and K. Dietary fats are needed for the conversion of carotene to vitamin A, for mineral absorption and for a host of other processes." Lipid hypothesis says that there is a direct relationship between the amount of saturated fat and cholesterol in the diet and the incidence of coronary heart disease. Most people would be surprised to learn that there is, in fact very little evidence to support the contention that a diet low in cholesterol and saturated fat actually reduces death from heart disease or in any way increases one's life span. Consider the following:

~ Before 1920 coronary heart disease was rare in America; so rare that when a young internist named Paul Dudley White introduced the German electrocardiograph to his colleagues at Harvard University, they advised him to concentrate on a more profitable branch of medicine. The new machine revealed the presence of arterial blockages, thus permitting early diagnosis of coronary heart disease. But in those days clogged arteries were a medical rarity, and White had to search for patients who could benefit from his new technology. During the next forty years, however, the incidence of coronary heart disease rose dramatically, so much so that by the mid-1950's heart disease was the leading cause of death among Americans. Today heart disease causes at least 40 percent of all US deaths. If, as we have been told, heart disease is caused by consumption of saturated fats, one would expect to find a corresponding increase in animal fat in the American diet. Actually, the reverse is true. During the sixty-year period from 1910 to 1970, the proportion of traditional animal fat in the American diet declined from 83 percent to 62 percent, and butter consumption plummeted from 18 pounds per person per year to four. During the past eighty years, dietary cholesterol intake has increased only 1 percent. During the same period the percentage of dietary vegetable oils in the form of margarine, shortening and refined oils increased about 400 percent while the consumption of sugar and processed foods increased about 60 percent.
Mary G. Enig, PhD, Trans Fatty Acids in the Food Supply: A Comprehensive Report Covering 60 Years of Research, 2nd Edition

~ The Framington Heart Study is often cited as proof of the lipid hypothesis. This study began in 1948 and involved about 6,000 people from the town of Framington, Massachussetts. Two groups were compared at five-year intervals-- those who consumed little cholesterol and saturated fat and those who consumed large amounts. After 40 years, the director of this study had to admit: "In Framington, Mass., the more saturated fat one ate, the more cholesterol one ate, the more calories one ate, the lower the person's serum cholesterol... we found that the people who ate the most cholesterol, ate the most saturated fat, ate the most calories, weighed the least and were the most physically active." The study did show that those who weighed more and had abnormally high blood cholesterol levels were slightly more at risk for future heart disease, but weight gain and cholesterol levels had an inverse correlation with fat and cholesterol intake in the diet.
William Castelli, Archives of Internal Medicine, Jul 1992
H Hubert et al, Circulation, 1983; Smith and Pinckney, Diet, Blood Cholesterol and Coronary Heart Disease; A Critical Review of the Literature, Vol 2, 1991

~ In a multi-year British study involving several thousand men, half were asked to reduce saturated fat and cholesterol in their diets, to stop smoking and to increase consumption of unsaturated oils such as margarine and vegetable oils. After one year, those on the "good" diet had 100 percent more deaths than those on the "bad" diet, in spite of the fact that those on the "bad" diet continued to smoke! But in describing the study, the author ignored these results in favor of a politically correct conclusion: "The implication for public health policy in the UK is that a preventive programme such as we evaluated in this trial is probably effective..."
G. Rose et al, The Lancet, 1983

I will write more tomorrow, but for tonight, but a pat of butter on your vegetables!

snow snow snow

I had to start off this post with a couple pics of the kids... It was Caroline's birthday on Thursday. We now have an official teenager in the house!!! She always wishes for snow on her birthday, and I guess God was listening...
Yesterday it started snowing in the wee hours of the morning and didn't stop all day! It was a light powdery snow. The kids went out sledding for a couple hours while I baked Christmas cookies and Craig finished laying the floor in the second room of my studio. I didn't go out until 10:30 pm and I love the night sky during a snowstorm! It was so peaceful and beautiful out. There is no noise when there's so much snow! We got over a foot. Unfortunately our caroling party was cancelled so we'll have to fa la la here at home.
Ellie could barely get through the snow!
Our neighbor's tree in their side yard looked gorgeous lit up under the boughs of snow.

It was hard to take photos at night but the house was all blanketed and the Christmas lights sparkled under the snow.
You can barely make out me and Ellie walking back to the house on the driveway!

Today it is bright and sunny! The kids are out sledding again... they forgot about a bigger hill that they missed yesterday.

Instead of a poinsettia plant this year, I found this... just beautiful and it sits in my kitchen window where I see it every day...
The sky today is just so blue! It's like a Christmas card out there!!!

Hope you're having a great day and staying warm!
5 more days until Christmas!! ;)

did you know...

~ flax seeds or ground flax seed helps to lower cholesterol. (flax seed oil, however, does not produce those results.) Add a teaspoon to your morning breakfast cereal.

~ coconut milk contains lauric acid which has anti-microbial, anti-viral, and anti-inflammatory properties which can fight viruses like the swine flu! It increases your immunity to colds and flu. (Prescription antibiotics while killing the bad bacteria kills also the good bacteria, but natural lauric acid maintains the good while fighting the bad. Another good reason to stay with real food.) We buy coconut milk in a half gallon in the organic aisle of our grocery store. Add it to smoothies or to your breakfast cereal.

~ yoga can help anxiety and depression naturally: hormone neurotransmitters are lowered creating a sense of calm and levels of oxygen are increased in the brain elevating mood at the same time. I practice yoga daily for these benefits and for strength and flexibility... hatha concentrates on breathing and posture, iyengar on strength, flexibility, endurance and balance, and vinyasa for coordination of the breath and movement for a very physically active form of yoga.

good movie

We went to opening night of the AVATAR movie for Caroline's 13th birthday (which was on Thursday)! I didn't know if I was going to like it, but it was a really good story and the creativity of the animation was incredible! I know I'll end up watching it again because the kids already know they want it on DVD. It's about time the mainstream media went deeper into their imaginations.

first peek

I just finished the illustrations for my Christmas card!! Now I just have to get the cards made and addressed and sent! I have always loved the Nutcracker Ballet so I used that as my theme for the 2009 card. While I painted, I listened to it and that proved to be even more inspiring. This is such a magical time of year and making cards is my favorite thing to do.

The Blind Side

We just saw "The Blind Side" with Sandra Bullock about the real life story of Michael Orr. I absolutely loved it. Besides the fact that Sandra Bullock was brilliant as well as the rest of the whole cast... in fact I forgot that it was Tim McGraw playing the father because he did such a great job... I loved her character Leigh Anne Tuohy's heart and bravery to do what she felt was the best thing regardless of what anyone would think about it. Especially when it came to taking care of another child even though at first she knew nothing about him. She just knew it was the right thing to do. I'm so thankful that there are real people out there who do what's right regardless of the inconvenience, the cost or expectations. If you see it, you might want to bring tissues. But there's also plenty of funny parts. I think everyone should see it!

found

When I pulled out my watercolor block to work on my Christmas card, I found a painting that I had never finished of Brandt Point in Nantucket, MA. It was where Craig and I went on our honeymoon. I feel really badly that this was probably a present for him that remained unfinished. I hate to tear it off the tablet unfinished but I probably won't go back to it. It reminded me of how much I loved to watercolor and how I shouldn't let myself get intimidated by all the "rules" of painting and just paint!

real estate trivia

Have you ever wondered where those homes in some of our favorite movies are? On one of my favorite sites Zillow.com you can see the real Home Alone house... where it is and what it's worth. They also have the apartment building where Elf was filmed, the house from A Christmas Story, and a bunch of others under Famous TV Homes. You can also track the value of your own home (and your neighbor's!). And if you're in the market for a movie house, the guy who owns the house from A Christmas Story will move for $10,000,000.00!

moomah

If you are on the small magazine mailing list, you might have seen the illustrations in the winter issue by Julia Pott. I'm not sure how I found moomah but it's one of the many projects she's involved in and when I looked it up (it's in New York), I was blown away with how cool it is... how great the whole concept is and how much I wanted Hatch to become what this already is. So.... if you ever get to this part of town, you must stop in and see it! Or if you're lucky enough to live nearby, it sounds like their classes and food are wonderful!

still love this movie...

inspiration

Sean Mahan's work is just so beautiful. He says his technique is graphite renderings on luan wood with washes of acrylic. I have never seen anything like this and it reminded me of the series of drawings I was doing. Hope you are inspired too!

day after the first snow

"It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!..."
I kept looking out the windows this morning when there was more snow cover and was mesmerized by the beauty of it all. I don't understand how every single year it seems like something new when the first snow comes. It's just all so gorgeous!!!
Ellie LOVES the snow... she eats it and hops and prances about in it!
Looks like the sun is beginning to melt it all...
Happy St. Nicholas Day! I actually forgot it was today but the kids reminded me last night when they put out their slippers. Luckily St. Nick keeps little things tucked away for occasions like this. And he shares my affinity for Lindt truffles... imagine that! I did get one Happy St. Nick's Day note today (thanks Paul!) and hope everyone else is getting in the holiday spirit! ;)

Gwen Frostic's studio

It's a really sad day for me... Gwen Frostic's studio in Benzonia, Michigan has closed at the end of November. I carried some of her notecards at Hatch and back in 2005 I brainstormed with the studio's owner Pam Lorenz about how to get more exposure for her work. Pam inherited the beautiful working studio when Gwen passed away. Gwen is an important Michigan artist and one who has been a part of my family history in that every time we went to vacation up at the Lake, we would stop by the studio to visit and buy our calendars for the year. I don't really remember ever not having something of Gwen Frostic's around my home. I just realized I hadn't ordered my calendar for 2010 and went online to her site and that's when I saw that they had to close. I know creatives at Martha Stewart Living appreciated her, having frequently featured her printed cards and they actually did an article about her life a few years ago. The studio still printed her images on big, old letterpresses-- the old fashioned way and I just loved them! So now, not only am I missing Gwen Frostic but now her work... I will have to keep all the things that I already have and treasure them.
