running - day 1

As I wrote the other day, I am RUNNING!!! (can you believe it? anything is possible!) I am reading "Run Less Run Faster" by Bill Pierce, Scott Murr, and Ray Moss that Linnea recommended and I do too!  Here's some things that make it a little more fun:

My sportsline pedometer which has a stopwatch so I can watch my time intervals! It is as thin as a credit card! I jotted my interval times on my hand so I'd remember. (not so good). I have great shoes... I love my Asic gels. If you wear your running shoes frequently, you should replace them every year because the insoles/cushioning wears down and they aren't effective anymore.

You have to have an ipod! I made up my own running play list and it got me MOVING!
[Beth's running playlist: Sweet Emotion by Aerosmith, Tubthumping by Chumbawamba, Song 2 by Blur, Steal My Sunshine by LEN, Unbelievable by EMF, Walk This Way by Aerosmith, Island in the Sun by Weezer, Praise You by Fatboy Slim, I Will Possess Your Heart by Death Cab for Cuties, and Electric Avenue by Eddy Grant (ha!)] I will change this frequently.

You also have to have a baseball cap or something to cover your hair and to keep the sun out of your eyes (what sun? you just have a bedhead!!!).  {Never before seen photography of Beth after running her 32 minutes and having just rolled out of bed:
If you want to run with me, I suggest you buy the book (you can get all of this here!), check with your doctor if you're old like me, and do some stretching before you start.

The 5-K Novice Training Program
This program is designed to gradually move the inactive individual from walker to runner. It begins primarily with walking, interspersed with short intervals of running during a half-hour workout. Run at a comfortable pace. (Note: W= Walk; R= Run) 12 week program, 3 x per week plus 2-3 days of strength training and flexibility exercises on off days.

Week #1/ Day #1 :  32 minutes total:
W10 min;
(R 1 min, W 2 min) x 4;
W 10 min

Yippeee... we're off to a great start!!!!

Get siked:

When I was much younger, I use to run, run, run (I won two medals)
I am three year older than you, so now I run after mushrooms in the wood ;) I would love to be listening to your ipod right now, but I'm eating some chocolate ;) I have pair of wonderful Adidas shoes > too scientific (I don't know how to put them on ! Ha ha ha ) and i never wear them :) I have the same baseball cap (in orange) :) But if I were your neighbour i probably would run with you :)

Good for you!! I am impressed - one day we can run a half marathon together!!

I was out in Friday running and 2 miles in my calf seized up - I managed to walk/run the 2 miles home but will have to rest for a few days - same calf muscle I tore playing badminton a few months back.....

Keep on running....

I wouldn't look nearly that good if I'd just run for 32 minutes!!

Good luck with the running :)

I love it that your are running! I wouldn't run if a dog was hanging onto my bum! But I walk. I could walk for days! I love your play list. Since you're an Aerosmith kinda gal. May I suggest 'Dude looks like a lady'. Great beat to get you going! Jen

Your reply to my comments made me happy. Thank you! It is nice to talk politics with someone who has different viewpoints and doesn't make crazy accusations about the other party. I really am interested in making an informed decision. In response to the running, one day it dawned on me that I could actually run in some kind of a race if I wanted to. I haven't ever done any running, but at least I know I have that potential if I work at it. I'm inspired by your beginning.

Yeah, Beth! Keep up the good work! To answer your question on my blog...9/17. It came and went without too much fanfare this year, but that's okay. We do need to get together soon!

Ah. Yeah. Ummm. See? Now I would LOVE to run with you. I'd LOVE it, but unfortunately I can't. Much as it pains me to turn you down on this one. Because really? Running would be my most favourite thing in the world. Ever. But there's just one teeny tiny little thing that stops me.

.... I'm i-n-c-r-e-d-i-b-l-y lazy ....

I'll be with you in spirit though. Even though I'll be sitting on my sofa while you do that thing with your legs ....

;)
