I know I posted about this before, but I am actually in the middle of reading it now and I love it! I highly recommend it to anyone with younger children (about the ages of Amanda's children in the cover photo). I realized that my own mom raised me this way, with an appreciation for nature, a love of creating and repurposing found objects and materials. I credit this for my love of art, but I also see the value in it in learning to live life fully and with contentment. That's a lot to get out of a little book, but if I were to write a book about how to raise children, this would be it! Some of my friends are already living this way, especially my best friend Caroline. She is an artist and one of the most creative people I know and she inspires me like this all the time. And so many of you that I know through your blogs! I find when I'm being creative, my children want to make things also. Here is a link to Amanda's site with more info on the book, and her blog, and here's where you can order through Amazon!

i agree i totally loved reading this book. as i told you it gave me good insight for activities for us as a family. i love amanda's blog. she is very inspiring. in such a hectic world, it seems like, her world stands still. so peaceful. don't you think?
Bethany,
Is this book mostly aimed at an American audience or would you get just as much out of it in Australia? I guess I want to know if the cultural content and concepts are universal?
Nathalie... I definitely agree with you!
Jen... I think the ideas in this book are universal. I think every culture benefits from children who are allowed to express their creativity in many ways and who are encouraged to appreciate nature, no matter where the children live! I think the ideas presented could be applied to anyone's values and lifestyle, as well as culture.
Although I have not read this book, from what I know I think it would be a lovely way to raise happy healthy children. I always loved it when our mom told us that it is ok to be different. She always encouraged us to "color outside the lines".
I agree with nathalie... it seems Amanda's world stands still. I love the book too!!! It fosters such great values... and puts preeminence in family, which seems to so easily get lost in today's world of tv, video games and technology!
I've followed her blog off and on over the past couple of years. There's an older book titled 'Learning Through Play' that you might enjoy, too.
I love that you share your sketch book... its so inspiring!
