I am not one to usually be attracted to older paintings... but Vermeer... I just love the colors and the way he captures the subjects. In Girl with a Pearl Earring, it showed the way they crushed the stones to make the paints. I thought about that as I bought my ultramarine blue. Traditionally it was made of crushed lapis lazuli. And then I found this website which lists Vermeers palette colors and was amazed that someone actually knew this! This is mid-17th century! I love the yellow and blue of this painting. I must be in a blue period right now! The lips and eyes are so beautiful too! It's truly awesome.Tuesday, January 29, 2008
because I love Vermeer

I went to a Rembrandt exhibit at The Getty two years ago. He's never been one of my favorites. Too dark for me, even though he introduced a lot of 'light' into his paintings.
Vermeer is more to my liking. And yes, I do love the blue and yellow, too. I have a little Monet blue and yellow print in my family room.
vermeer is also one of my favorite 'old school' painters. The Frick Museum in NYC has a nice collection of them if you are ever in the city again.
It is a fabulous painting and I am amazed that someone knows the colours! It's funny how a book can make a painting so famous!
I love everything about that portrait. The colours are wonderful and I imagine they were amazing when the portrait was first done. It's easy to forget that we haven't always had nice tubes of pretty colours to play with isn't it?
I love your little sketch of you at the easel :) I'm sure your art course will be wonderful!

You're so talented!!! And WOW-- I LOVE your banner! :)
I love the old masters. I have a huge soft spot for anything Maxfield Parrish though. That man had a gift. Although he also would have had a fry pan attached to his head if he were my hubby and spent that much time in the studio with the nanny as a model! Ha. Ha.
Great post Bethany.

I loved the movie as well. The colors were so lush and rich. Aren't you grateful you don't have to crush stones to make your own paints. If that were the case, I would never have time for painting!
