Remembering Apricot

It's been two years since we lost Apricot, but it's hard not to remember how wonderful a pet she was! She thought she was a people-- cuddling the kids like a mother cat or being my baby. She loved everyone who came to the house and showed her loving.
We think we might have found a puppy and are looking into that soon. This got me thinking about her and I thought I'd dedicate this blog to remembering the fun and love we gave and received from having her.

People watching...

Do you ever like to sit in a busy public place and watch the people go by? I think that is one of Craig's favorite things to do! We sat in front of the Met in NYC one time and just watched all the different people walk past us. I always feel kind of embarressed because it isn't polite to stare at people. But it is interesting... which brings me to this website that I've had the link to (over there on the right of my blog) but didn't know whether to say anything about it (guilty pleasure?). It is called the Satorialist and it is written by Scott Schuman who has been in the fashion industry for years and saw how designers use inspiration off the street all the time. He constantly posts photos of people he sees, several times a day, from NYC, Milan, Paris and any great fashion city you can think of. It is fun to look...sometimes they are decked out, sometimes not, and sometimes just downright eccentric! And they are all ages. I find that I love to look at men's clothing ensembles. Dressing Craig is one of my favorite things to do and he always gives me full credit. (I dress him way better than myself!) People think he's trying to make an excuse for something when he says "My wife dresses me." But he's just giving credit where credit is due! And he loves the things too...especially that purple striped bow tie!!! Clothing is definately the area where people express their creativity most often (or fail to!). Bon ensemble!

Seen Art?

I haven't seen any art lately... at least not art by me! Yes, this is a problem. And yes, this will have to change considering my blog says that it is about my studio and the work that I do. Tomorrow I teach, but after that, I should be able to do something.

If you never read the book Seen Art? it is really fun and covers the different art at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. We actually got it before one of our trips to NYC and after we visited MOMA, the kids remembered seeing the art in the book. Definately a way to travel if you don't live as close to the Big Apple like we do.

So ask me again next week: "Seen ART???"

A slice of red heaven...

I just saw this posted on Cream Puffs in Venice Blog: Red velvet cupcakes! I immediately thought of Marv (Craig's Dad) and will have to try to remember to find a recipe to make this on his birthday. He's the only one I know who's favorite cake is Red Velvet! This cupcake fits nicely with my red theme. Hmmm. Maybe I should celebrate red food regularly: red cranberry orange muffins, red raspberry apple cobbler... the list could be endless! Now I'm hungry. Off to see about dinner!

Look what I found!

After my bicycle email conversation with Cincinnati Caroline, I find this wonderful fabric from FreeSpirit Quilting Fabrics: "Lightning Bugs and Other Mysteries" by Heather Ross. (She is an illustrator, turned fabric designer...hmmmm...there's a great idea!). Who couldn't love those banana seat bikes with those handlebars that you didn't have to bend over to reach. And, as C pointed out to me, the "sissy bar" that I never had! Of course the above bikes do not have the sissy bar... which leads me to the conclusion that it was a Toledo fad and we true Cincinnatians did not follow that trendy way. Might I add that I did have a white basket with 3 different colored daisies on it, plastic mind you. Very cool and very useful at the same time. No one ever said I wasn't a pragmatic girl... form follows function, yada yada yada.
Now to get my hands on some of that fabric...think Craig would go for it in the family room???

Fun Fridays...

"English Horse Show"

"Best of Show"
I posted these two paintings for Leenie-Lou (aka Caroline). They are by Donna Ingemanson who does really fun illustrations. Caroline is on a dog kick right now but we haven't seen any collie puppies for sale yet.

More eye candy:
Fun Japanese dolls...

"Zipper Mouth" ?

Lady bugs are good luck!...

Planning a trip...

This is my favorite sight-seeing picture of me and the kids! I don't even remember off hand what year this was, but they were still in Montessori preschool. We are obviously in D.C. and Craig always jokes that this is NOT a good composition for a photo because I'm right under the monument. Oh well...I really stink at photography. But wait...he took the picture!!!!
I am pulling this out because we are planning a little spring break trip to D.C. again. The kids hardly remember being there before and I'm trying to decide *what* to see??? There is so much there. At that time Nathaniel was really into dinosaurs so we saw those. We went to the sculpture garden which we might do again. I've never seen the White House but I'm not sure it's even open anymore. History has been a favorite subject this year and they LOVED Philadelphia so they should get a kick out of the Capital building and other National Monuments.
.
Side note: I FINALLY got my hair cut on Monday evening, after waiting since November. And I LOVE it!! That is very odd for me to say but I went back to Elan and they are wonderful with color and not pouffing my hair up (like we're still in the 80's). Aveda salons are pretty good. Now, you're wondering where the photo is. Well.... I hate taking pictures of myself.... HATE. So the chances are unlikely.
.
And one more thing: I didn't post this yesterday because I was too sad and needed to focus on the good things in life... I am asking you to pray for Scott Hofmann's sister Dea. She and her three children just lost Bill, her husband and their dad yesterday. It is extremely hard to imagine that happening but things like this make the silly things in life move aside and give us pause to consider what really matters. I wish there was something more I could do, so I am waiting to see if there is something. I have one idea that I will pass by Caroline (Hofmann) soon.
.
Also, my Grandma Hazel is in the hospital... she fell and was really hurt. She is going to go into a nursing home now and this is really hard on everyone, especially Mom and the other kids.
.
LOTS of hugs and good thoughts going out to Ohio right now .... xoxoxoxoxo

Make some spring flowers!

I just found the coolest website called Flower Maker Beta (click on the name to get there). You can create beautiful flowers or a flower garden online and save it for others to enjoy! Just what we need to kick start spring!
Thanks to http://www.maldindag.net/ for this great link!

Wyeth

I have always loved Andrew Wyeth's quiet watercolors and one in particular at the Cincinnati Art Museum (which I can't find a picture of) that I always found and stared at when I was growing up. I looked for it online and found out that right now through May 6th, the Cincinnati Art Museum is having a special show of Andrew Wyeth's work! We just saw the largest collection of the Wyeth family's work at Brandywine River Museum but those of you who are lucky to be in Cincy, can see more!
The painting of a Pennsylvania Mill is so true to what you see around this area, especially in the snow right now! (though it is melting today.)
Below are two paintings by Andrew Wyeth's father, N.C. Wyeth who is known for his magnificent illustrations of the classics. After seeing both, I have to say that I lean more toward the illustrations for their beautiful color. But I love both artist's work. I am a realist at heart.

Birthday Weekend

A Big HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO NATHANIEL today!!!! He is nine years old... his last year in the single digits! We spent the weekend celebrating his birthday and again today. It is a Legos Bionicle birthday this year... lots of Legos!

Mom and Jim drove in for the weekend, which ended up being very snowy... 6 inches to be exact. We made snowmen and went for a little snow hike. On Sunday we drove out to Brandywine River Art Museum and then took the scenic way back through Strasburg, which is on the east side of Lancaster. The sun is shining and we are hoping that tomorrow does bring the first day of spring!!!

New Curtain!

You're probably wondering why I'm taking pictures of my laundry room! I just made this curtain and I'm showing off my handiwork. It only took about an hour for the whole thing...gingham is like graph paper, you just follow the lines!
Well it looks like March is playing more tricks-- two days ago we had the windows open and today, we're getting a snow storm!!! Mom and Jim were supposed to drive in today from Ohio, but they are staying at Anne's in Chambersburg until tomorrow morning. That's how I found some time to sew my curtain!
I decided to get out a few Easter decorations, just to remind everyone that spring is, indeed, around the corner! (those are my spring placemats I sewed last year!)

Birthday Wishes...

It almost got away...
Happy Birthday Glenda!!!
Wednesday came and went without a birthday posting for you... but here it is (with Jane!).
I hope you had a really good birthday and we all wish you a wonderful year this year!
I know you'd rather be down in Florida with Jane and family, but please come visit us soon in Pennsylvania. We love you!!!!

Peppermint Patty

MY ALTER EGO
What is it about Peppermint Patty that I always related to? Her tomboy assertiveness, her attraction to comfortable footwear at all times, or her timeless bob with bangs? Or was it how nice she always was to Marcy who had double her IQ but they still remained best friends? Maybe it was that her name was equivalent to chocolate and peppermint? I think it was that she had a big crush on Charlie Brown, and who didn't like Chuck?! She could play baseball with the best of them, but still had that girly-romantic side! Whatever the reason, she was always my kind of girl.

Daydreaming of Spring

It is hard to believe that last week we were pushing snow around!! Actually these photos were taken in 2005 (you might recognize them)... I love red tulips and pansies. I want to get pansies for my porch railing boxes... considering we never know what the weather will do. But it is feeling like spring today. Originally they called for near 70 degree temps...but it only got up to the 60's and is still chilly. Rain is coming tomorrow.
You might have noticed there is no knitting going on. There is a reason for this...but I will divulge that later, maybe. There is NO excuse for a lack of art work... that's just me being too busy with other things. I'm getting ready for a visit from Mom and Jim....had to unpack the guest room and ready the bed for them. We might take a trip down to Brandywine if they are willing. Caroline and I think that is a wonderful idea! Craig has votes in for the home show. Next week is Nathaniel's 9th birthday so I need to get a cake baked for him this weekend! His birthday is all about Legos this year...that's what he wanted. Maybe a Lego cake...hmmmm. We also want to get him a bike because he outgrew his other one and he's the only family member without one. He is the only kid I know that doesn't really care about bikes... We LIVED on our bikes growing up!!! Jane and I had those wonderful bright blue and white banana seat bikes that we rode everywhere...and pretended to be "Chips" policewomen on! Anne...I really don't remember your bike,...why is that??? I think Nathaniel just needs a good bike with handlebar breaks and he'll come around. Maybe even a banana seat...now that's an idea!

Snow in March...

We got more snow last night and today! This is a photo of our new home. You really find out how long the driveway is when you have to shovel it!

I enlisted help for part of it:

They actually thought it was fun.
Did I tell you that the land that our house sits on used to be a Christmas Tree Farm? There are mature evergreens all around us and they looked beautiful dressed in white snow...

After shoveling, we took a little nature hike up the hill in back to track animals. We saw places where the deer have been nibbling at the bark. You can see the back of our house in this photo...

We hear owls at night also... there are several trees in the back that have holes in them-- perfect for owls to nest in (see below). They sound like this: whooo who who. Debbie, do you know what kind that might be? I still remember the Barn Owl from Mr. Henning's Biology class so I know it's not that one (that and we don't have a barn!)

Maybe spring will come soon but right now it really feels like winter!

Math Olympics at York Blended Program

This is 7-8 hours of preparation work... yikes! Maybe I spend way too much time on lessons, but I can't imagine doing anything less than 100%. It turned out well and I think they had fun... some will never put "fun" and "math" in the same sentence!!

Jonathan, Emma and Cecelia doing a probability dice game... these are some of "my" kids...love them!! Below are more kids working at different stations. Caroline and Nathaniel are playing money bingo...

COLOR!!!

Adobe has a website that is too much fun if you like color: kuler . (Click on the name to take you there). Play with all different color combinations by clicking on "create". See color combos by other people. This is great for design work, but also for choosing colors in your home or even clothing...fun, fun, fun!

Falling in love...

with Denmark! Who knew? Red, red, red everywhere! And the Danish...well, who couldn't like a country that's people share a name with a pastry...yum! So maybe this will be added to my list of places to visit in my lifetime! I have always loved the design aesthetic of that region up to Sweden and Norway-- bright, crisp colors paired with white-- happy, dramatic. These photos above were just posted to Liselotte's website today. I think we would be friends if I spoke Danish (though it appears she speaks English). Sorry to keep snagging other people's photos, but I haven't had time to take any good ones myself and I haven't had a chance to work on my own projects for a couple weeks. I think curtains are next on the list...

Happy Birthday Dad!!!

I had to wish my favorite Dad a BIG Happy Birthday today!!!! I love you Dad!!! Of course I had to include some photos he sent me from his recent vacation to Cancun. I love the second one... I don't think you can have any more fun than that! I'm a lucky girl to have a Dad that loves me so much, so here's to you Dad... Hope this year is really good to you!!!
XOXOXO~ Beth
